Ark Group – Editor, reports division

The reports division of Ark Group publishes around 40 practical management guides each year, providing topical advice and guidance to leaders in law firms, public sector organisations and knowledge and information functions.

Reporting to the commissioning editor, the editor will take responsibility for developing and commissioning new report products, overseeing projects through all stages of development and production, and working closely with authors to deliver high-quality products.

You must have at least 18 months’ editorial and/or commissioning experience. Commercial acumen, attention to detail and the ability to support the growth aims of the reports division are essential skills for the role. Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate an understanding of key topics relating to knowledge and information management and/or public sector management.

Key Tasks

  • Developing and maintaining in-depth market knowledge through desk research and personal contacts
  • Generating ideas for commercially-viable products across the reports and events divisions
  • Commissioning reports and working closely with authors to agree schedules and content so that these are delivered to schedule and budget
  • Editing an agreed number of reports per month, in line with company requirements
  • Handing over titles, briefing text and cover designs to production colleagues, and ensuring that the end product is of high quality
  • Working closely with production, sales and marketing colleagues to ensure reports are published on time and promoted effectively. You will also work closely with events and editorial teams in the rest of the company to share knowledge and contacts

Key skills

  • Commercial acumen – the ability to spot and exploit a promising commercial opportunity
  • An excellent grasp of spelling and grammar, and meticulous attention to detail, are essential for this role
  • Ability to get to grips with new markets quickly, through effective research
  • Good negotiation skills, to ensure products are delivered on time and on budget
  • Relationship building – gaining the trust and cooperation of industry experts and senior level practitioners
  • Efficient and calm under pressure – to enable the reports division to grow, you will need to work quickly, efficiently and to tight deadlines
  • Able to take the initiative and work autonomously, but also cooperate with and assist team members when required

Salary range £24-28,000 per annum, commensurate with experience
