Facebook prepares for GDPR, but is it doing enough worldwide?

Nick Stone, ARK Group conference producer, looks at the current challenges facing Facebook as they prepare for GDPR.

“We’re still nailing down details on this, but it should directionally be, in spirit, the whole thing” Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, Facebook – talking to Reuters on GDPR, March 2018

With GDPR implementation day just weeks away, Facebook is rolling out increased privacy protection ahead of the new regime, although CEO Mark Zuckerberg refused to commit to GDPR becoming the standard for the social network across the world.

While Mr Zuckerberg appears to hint at some data protection ambiguity, some in the US appear keener on adopting the forthcoming EU standards. As the Center for Digital Democracy’s Jeff Chester said, “We want Facebook and Google and all the other companies to immediately adopt in the United States and worldwide any new protections that they implement in Europe”.

On top of the GDPR compliance preproperates, Facebook is also offering users the option to bulk remove applications. It was these integrations with external developers which led to the current Cambridge Analytica data harvesting scandal.

ARK Group’s GRPR event on 24 April 2018 prepares law firms and provides the essential practical risk and compliance advice in readiness for the new regime.
